If there really are just seven original plots inside world, it's odd that boy meets girl is usually mentioned, and society goes bad and attacks the nice guy never is. Yet we've got Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, Your House with the Scorpion—and now, following an extended tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins hasn't tied her future to some specific date, or weighted it down with a lot of finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers is a gripping story set in a very postapocalyptic world the place where a replacement for that United States demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children being used as gladiators inside a televised fight on the death.Katniss, from the thing that was once Appalachia, offers to adopt the host to her sister inside the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, jane is entirely focused on survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the significance of holding on one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a brand new Theseus, is cold, calculating but still likable. She has the attributes to get a winner, where Peeta has the grace to get a fantastic loser.It's no accident why these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. the State of Panem—which needs to help keep its tributaries subdued and its particular citizens complacent—may have came up with Games, but mindless television may be the real danger, the means by which society pacifies its citizens and punishes those who don't conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, celebrate this the best book on the right time. What happens if we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be enthusiastic about grooming, we'll talk funny, and all our sentences can easily while using same rise as questions. When Katniss is shipped to stylists to be made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked looking at them, strangely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that I'm no more self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet, she thinks. In order not to hate these creatures who are sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It isn't really only the contestants who risk the loss with their humanity. It is all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not exactly the Games but the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this can be the first book in a series, not everything is resolved, and what exactly is left unanswered could be the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We understand what she gets given approximately survive, although not if the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to understand more.

When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected since the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to get all of the fighting skills of an lump of bread dough, will probably be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives that have trained for this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic as they form alliances and friendships inside the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. This book will definitely resonate while using generation raised on reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'American Gladiator.' A Q&A with Suzanne Collins, Author of Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)
Q: You have said in the start that The Hunger Games story was intended like a trilogy. Did it really end the means by which you planned it from your beginning?

A: Very much so. While I did not know every detail, of course, the arc of the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, for the eventual outcome remained constant throughout the writing process.

Q: We understand you worked about the initial screenplay for the film to get according to The Hunger Games. What could be the biggest distinction between writing a novel and writing a screenplay?

A: There are several significant differences. Time, for starters. When you're adapting a novel in to a two-hour movie you can not take everything with you. The story has to get condensed to match the newest form. Then you have the question of how best to adopt the sunday paper told within the first person and provides tense and transform it in a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you don't ever leave Katniss to get a second and so are privy to all or any of her thoughts so you will need a way to dramatize her inner world and to generate it possible for other characters to exist beyond her company. Finally, you have the challenge of how you can present the violence while still maintaining a PG-13 rating so that your core audience can view it. A lots of the situation is acceptable on a page that would not be on the screen. But exactly how certain moments are depicted could eventually be inside the director's hands.

Q: Are you currently capable of consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games, or are you immersed inside the world you might be currently creating so fully who's is just too challenging to consider new ideas?

A: We've a number of seeds of ideas boating in my head but--given a good deal of of my focus remains on The Hunger Games--it will probably be awhile before one fully emerges and I can begin to develop it.

Q: The Hunger Games is a yearly televised event in which one boy the other girl from each in the twelve districts is made to participate in a fight-to-the-death on live TV. What can you imagine the selling point of reality television is--to both kids and adults?

A: Well, they're often set up as games and, like sporting events, there's an desire for seeing who wins. The contestants are often unknown, which makes them relatable. Sometimes they have very talented people performing. Then there is the voyeuristic thrill—watching people being humiliated, or delivered to tears, or suffering physically--which I find very disturbing. There's also the possibility for desensitizing the audience, to ensure that when they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, this doesn't happen possess the impact it should.

Q: If you were instructed to compete within the Hunger Games, what do you think that your skill would be?

A: Hiding. I'd be scaling those trees like Katniss and Rue. Since I became trained in sword-fighting, I guess my best hope will be to get hold of the rapier if there were one available. But the truth is I'd probably get with regards to a four in Training.

Q: What does one hope readers should come away with whenever they read The Hunger Games trilogy?

A: Questions about how elements in the books might be relevant in their own lives. And, when they are disturbing, what you might do about them.

Gr 7 Up–The final installment of Suzanne Collins's trilogy sets Katniss in a single more Hunger Game, but this time around it's for world control. While it is really a clever twist for the original plot, it means that there is less focus on the individual characters and much more on political intrigue and large scale destruction. That said, Carolyn McCormick continues to breathe life right into a less vibrant Katniss by showing her despair both at those she feels accountable for killing and at her motives and choices. This is an older, wiser, sadder, and very reluctant heroine, torn between revenge and compassion. McCormick captures these conflicts by changing the pitch and pacing of Katniss's voice. Katniss is both a pawn from the rebels as well as the victim of President Snow, who uses Peeta to make an endeavor to control Katniss. Peeta's struggles are well evidenced in his voice, which goes from rage to puzzlement for an unsure go back to sweetness. McCormick also helps make the secondary characters—some malevolent, others benevolent, and several confused—very real with distinct voices and agendas/concerns. She acts like an outside chronicler in giving listeners just “the facts” but in addition respects the individuality and unique challenges of each one with the main characters. Reviewers were happy to report that the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all looked forward for the third book within the series after this one's stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was as good as the original book Hunger Games or needs to be viewed as somewhat of an "sophomore slump." Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss's romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons to the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire used to be a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in the method in which will enthrall young readers without providing them with (too many) nightmares.

Everyone's taste in Kindle protection differs and we're all looking for different things and perceive an alternative value when it comes to product cost vs. features. This Kindle cover has several nice attributes, but does lack a few key features I find important (plus a bit of the extra I really could do without).

One thing about Kindle covers is they boil into two design types--the sleeve and the 'book style' covers. Lots of people like the protection and feel from the book type cover, plus some function as easels or stands. However, I will be within the camp where I merely prefer holding a 'naked' Kindle while reading. For people like me, the sleeve style could be the way to go.

One positive note, well it really is AVAILABLE. I believe Amazon does get a bit of your bonus when creating new products-they hold the accessories prepared to go. Granted it isn't really badly as when K3/Keyboard came out and a great deal of vendors were apparently left flat footed along with tons of inventory with out new product. I used to be sure a fresh Kindle was being released on this occasion when several sellers were suddenly slashing prices on his or her covers! This time around there are also other alternatives available, and not a complete lot, so again, this one is a minimum of AVAILABLE.

This sleeve is very lightweight--this is both a positive as well as a negative depending on your own use patterns. Part from the appeal from the sleeve is always to take proper care of the sleek nature of my Kindle. A heavy or bulky sleeve detracts using this while probably offering more protection. This strategy is light and low profile-- and though there exists padding, it really is more of your 'keep it safe inside a small purse' type. I would NOT feel at ease using this sleeve in the rougher environment (like my children's backpacks--or even mine). There is certainly minimal rigidity to the design and also the padding is fairly thin--it will protect the screen, but I'm unclear how good the whole Kindle would stand up to heavier impact. Again, perfect for some use patterns, not so ideal for others.

The zipper--positive or negative depending on your point of view. I prefer zippers in several places, I'm simply not wild about them near my Kindle screen as I am a bit of your klutz. Some designers put a protective fold or flap the maintain the zipper away through the actual holding compartment. Not an enormous thing, however i don't like the possibility of direct contact between the Kindle as well as the zipper.

The materials-hmmm. Not a nice way to express this, but there is a fairly strong chemical odor if the package is first opened. From a couple days this can be resolving however i can continue to smell it while holding it right up to my nose. A bit of your shut off and sensitive noses and airways may well not enjoy this!

The materials again--the fabric is just a little rough and pebbly and 2 tone (grey/black for starters and two shades of blue for the other)--my sons just like the look, but I don't realize that appealing and I suspect that it will 'pill' after awhile. The household Y chromosomes disagree with me (well, not in regards to the 'pill' part, they have no idea what I'm talking about--one of my parenting failures as We have not taught them this apparently), nevertheless they love just how the covers look.

The little (presumably) faux leather band isn't sewn completely down--which is nice because you are able to slip your hand through it and apply it to hold or as a possible attachment site. I love this.

The construction itself is perfectly done in terms of assembly. A very clean, tidy and quality look.

Overall, I give this 4 stars as. We have seen other designs which are in a position to take good care of the sleek profile but use a far more rigid material for better impact protection, which I prefer. I'm just a little leery from the zipper design and I'm not a big fan of the material used. However, there are lots of nice features too, and everything boils into personal taste and overall it can be a nice, quality, sleeve.

Recommended, just not for me (but these are for the kids and they also love them).

EDITED 11/17/11 (at least during my time zone..). Now my boys have been by using this sleeve for over the month now and that i wished to add a couple comments. On the plus side mit odor did disappear completely--no issue during my family, but it was bad enough that we think someone with reactive airways or even a strong nose could really think it is bothersome. No 'pilling' or zipper issues yet, nevertheless the way the zipper goes around there is one case with the Kindle falling out in clumps and striking the tile floor when my youngest thought it turned out closed all of the way. Obviously user error (the Kindle was fine thankfully!) but design-wise that might be a problem for someone.

This is training acceptable for my kiddos...at this time I'd give a 4.5 stars if I could!

Excellent case, fits the Kindle very nicely. Snug, but much less snug to make it challenging to fit the Kindle into. Case is VERY light and thin, picking it down using the Kindle in it, you almost feel as if there cannot be anything in there, since the Kindle can be so light too.

Feels like there could possibly be a touch of extra space about the side to be able to allow for the Kindle Touch, which can be slightly larger as opposed to new Kindle. Nevertheless it feels such as the case was designed just for your new Kindle without touch, it fits very well.

The inside material is soft as well as a bit spongy, and feels like it will offer you good protection for your Kindle. I am comfortable tossing this inside a bag or backpack without worrying about damaging the Kindle.

Zipper goes around 2 sides only, and works very smoothly. Great case!
